Veeam Endpoint Backup Review: Is It Worth It?

Fixing common Veeam Endpoint Backup (now known as Veeam Agent) errors quickly relies on isolating storage space, VSS framework stability, network permissions, and database integrity.

Most endpoint backup errors can be diagnosed by checking the local log directory located at C:\ProgramData\Veeam\Endpoint. 1. RPC Server is Unavailable / Network Path Not Found

This happens when the standalone endpoint machine loses connectivity to the backup repository or the Veeam Backup & Replication server.

Verify Network Sharing: Ensure File and Printer Sharing is enabled in the Windows Network and Sharing Center.

Open Firewall Ports: Verify that TCP ports 135, 445, and 6184 are open between the endpoint and the storage target.

Check the Target Path: Ensure that network shares (NAS/SAN) are fully accessible with the saved credentials. 2. VSS Control Error / Unable to Create Snapshot

Volume Shadow Copy Service (VSS) errors occur when Windows fails to freeze the file system to take a backup snapshot.

Restart the VSS Service: Open services.msc, locate Volume Shadow Copy, and restart it.

Clear Shadow Storage: Open Command Prompt as Administrator and run vssadmin list writers to look for errors. Free up drive space if the volume is close to maximum capacity.

Adjust Provider Settings: If managing the endpoint from a console, configure Veeam to use the default System Provider rather than a third-party option. 3. Not Enough Space on Disk

The destination storage target does not have enough capacity to hold the new backup file.

Reduce Retention Policies: Lower the number of restore points kept on disk in your job properties.

Run an Active Full Backup: If incremental chains have become bloated, trigger an Active Full to compress and reset the backup chain.

Enable Data Reduction: Ensure data compression and deduplication are active in your Veeam advanced settings. 4. Database Is Corrupted / Cannot Connect to Local Database

The local SQLite or LocalDB instance used by the Veeam agent has crashed or become corrupt.

Stop the Service: Stop the Veeam Agent for Microsoft Windows service in services.msc.

Trigger a Rebuild: Open regedit.exe and navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Veeam\Veeam Endpoint Backup.

Modify Registry: Create a new DWORD value named Recreatedatabase and set it to 1.

Restart Service: Restart the Veeam service and wait 5 minutes while it rebuilds a clean database. Delete the registry key afterward. 5. Service Fails to Start / Job Finished Unexpectedly

The underlying background processes hang, often after a backup job is abruptly canceled.

Kill Orphaned Processes: Open Task Manager and look for lingering Veeam.EndPoint.Manager.exe or Veeam.EndPoint.Service.exe processes.

Terminate PIDs: Manually end these tasks, then cleanly start the service again from the Windows Services console.
